Bicycle Health & Wellpath Sign Contract Extension for Virtual Opioid Use Disorder Treatment for People in Prison Reentry Program
March 12, 2025
On March 4, 2025, Bicycle Health announced that it and Wellpath signed an additional one-year contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) to continue virtual opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment for people in reentry in community placements. Since this contract started in February 2024, Bicycle Health has treated over 2,600 people residing in 139 FBOP Residential Reentry Centers (RRCs) across 45 states. Wellpath contracts with FBOP to provide physical health services to people in reentry housed in an RRC. The new contract expands access to Bicycle Health’s virtual model to RRCs nationwide.
Bicycle Health’s program provides medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), a customized treatment plan, peer support groups, and virtual wraparound support services delivered by specialized care coordinators trained to work with the FBOP population. Many adults in FBOP custody are already being treated for OUD with either oral (Suboxone, Zubsolv) or injectable buprenorphine (Sublocade, Brixadi) when they leave prison. The Bicycle Health coordinators work only with RRC residents receiving health services from Wellpath. The coordinators have training that helps streamline the care process for adults in custody trying to navigate their OUD care after their release.
Bicycle Health provides telehealth MOUD treatment. The company’s “whole person” approach to treatment encourages participants to focus on their life passions and goals, which has been shown to support recovery. Through its mobile application, Bicycle Health combines MOUD treatment, with behavioral health care, drug screening, therapy, and peer support. It provides services in 32 states and is in-network with insurers covering nearly 120 million people.
Wellpath provides many routine and specialized medical services to people in correctional and mental health facilities nationwide. It serves various FBOP facilities nationwide. The company is currently engaged in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings under a filing on November 11, 2024, to reduce about $550 million in debt. It reached an agreement with most of its first- and second-lien lenders. As part of the agreement, Wellpath intends to sell its Recovery Solutions business and initiate a separate reorganization of Wellpath Correctional Healthcare, which includes its Local Government and State & Federal business divisions. On January 30, 2025, Recovery Solutions announced it had completed a sale transaction and would operate as an independent organization focused solely on behavioral health.
While bankruptcy proceedings are ongoing, Wellpath plans to continue delivering services under its contracts covering more than 400 facilities across 37 states. The facilities include prisons, jails, state hospitals, forensic treatment, civil commitment centers, and community-based services. The company serves more than 220,000 people daily.
