Commercially Insured Consumers With Opioid Use Disorder Diagnoses Increased 39.8% From 2021 To 2024

The rate of opioid use disorder (OUD) diagnoses among consumers covered by commercial insurance increased by 39.8% between 2021 and 2024, according to an analysis of claims data by FAIR Health, an independent non-profit that reports on health care costs and health insurance information. The national rate of OUD diagnoses increased from 386 per 100,000 members in 2021 to 539 per 100,000 members in 2024.

The age distribution of those with OUD diagnoses who were commercially insured in 2024 included:

  • The over-65 age group had 10.4% of the total.
  • The 51 to 65 age group had 26.1% of the total.
  • The 41 to 50 age group had 26.0% of the total.
  • The 31 to 40 age group had 26.8% of the total.
  • The 23 to 30 age group had 8.5% of the total.
  • The under-23 age group had 2.2% of the total.

Overall, males were 55.7% of those who were commercially insured with OUD diagnoses in 2024, and females were 44.3%.

The five states with the reported five highest rates of commercially insured consumers receiving treatment for OUD in 2024 were:

  • Tennessee: 1,447 cases per 100,000 members.
  • West Virginia: 1,323 cases per 100,000 members.
  • Kentucky: 1,281 cases per 100,000 members.
  • Arkansas: 1,218 cases per 100,000 members.
  • Delaware: 1,165 cases per 100,000 members.

FAIR Health reported the statistics in Opioid Tracker National Statistics, a free tool to track OUD among commercially insured individuals nationally, and state-by-state. The tool and related reports are based on data from the FAIR Health National Private Insurance Claims (FH NPIC®) repository.
